The Cab
I woke up early today. It feels like I'm finally completely over my jet lag. Naturally, we headed into Manhattan today. Not only did I have a concert to catch in the evening, but my roommate also wanted to check out the Stussy and Supreme stores in SoHo. Four of us went today: three members from my lab and one other person. In the morning, just like yesterday, we caught the Route 4 jitney to the GWB bus station, hopped on the A train from there, and got off at Canal St.
The very first place we hit up after getting off at Canal St. was the Classic Football Shirts store. My roommate is a huge soccer fan, so we went in and the others tried on some jerseys too. I don't really pull off clothes that well. Sadly... Before heading to Manhattan, I looked it up and saw the Banksy Museum was nearby, so we bought tickets and went together. Honestly though, looking back on it now, I'm not sure if the museum was worth the price of admission. The photographs might have been genuine, but all the murals and things like that were just replicas. I'm not that into art, but it still wasn't a bad experience. I'm not sure what the others who went with me thought about it, though.
In Banksy Museum New York
We originally planned to head straight to the Stussy store, but we were starving, so we stopped by an Italian restaurant. We ordered pizza and pasta, and there was a standard 18% tip included. Come to think of it, we did get service that was actually worth the 18%. Back in Korea, you usually have to set out your own silverware most of the time, but here, the utensils and plates were already set up, and they even had a service where they poured our water for us. It seemed like the service gratuity charge wasn't there for nothing. The bill came out to $136 for the four of us, giving me another taste of American prices. Aside from that, it was brought up again that the other two people, excluding my roommate, wanted to see The Cab concert. To be completely honest, The Cab is strictly my own personal taste, so I wouldn't have minded going solo, but since we were already there together, I bought their tickets as well. This ended up being a mistake later on, though...
The Lunch
We ate somewhere near Chinatown, and after the meal, there was a boba shop nearby, so we stopped in to order. The problem started right there. Honestly, my stomach doesn't agree with dairy that well, but I overdid it today and ordered milk tea with extra tapioca pearls. Later on, when we stopped by the Stussy store, I felt like I was going to throw up. There was a line at the Stussy store, so I didn't feel it while we were waiting, but as soon as we walked inside, my stomach suddenly felt super messed up. Fearing I'd make a scene, I couldn't even say a word to my group and just walked out of the store and crouched down. I didn't end up throwing up, but getting some fresh air helped a bit. I texted my roommate that my stomach was upset and that I had stepped out for some air, then I tossed that damn drink in the trash and just waited. There were so many nice clothes in the Stussy store that I wanted to buy some for myself too, so it was a bummer. If I get the chance, I'll probably go back next time.
After hitting the Stussy store, we stopped by the Supreme store, but honestly, there was nothing really special. My roommate bought a hat, saying his mom likes them. It was a genuinely cool hat, though. It was green with a bunch of pins attached to the back of the cap, giving off the vibe of something American rappers would wear around. Then, another guy from our major wanted to check out the Nike store, so we went. It was 6 PM at that point, and honestly, I was pretty sure the concert was going to start at 6:30. So I really wanted to rush them, but since I wasn't traveling alone, I just sucked it up and waited.
Live of The Cab in Irving Plaza
We got to the venue at 6:40. I thought to myself, "Damn it. We're late," and waited around for 15 minutes before going inside. But guess what? The show hadn't even started. Turns out, 6:30 wasn't the showtime; it was just the door time for Irving Plaza where the concert was being held. The actual show kicked off at 7:30, and The Cab's set—the one I was there for—wasn't until 9:15 PM. Damn it, I waited for two and a half hours. I had paid 43 bucks a pop for the other two's tickets, and I felt incredibly bad about it. My roommate and the one guy who wasn't from our major only watched the opening act from 7:30 to 8:00 and dipped. The other guy and I stayed through the second act all the way to the third and final act, The Cab, before leaving.
The opening act honestly wasn't great. It seemed like a rookie artist—a punk-style act from LA named CARR. The songs were pretty meh, but the friend I was with said they were good at hyping up the crowd. The second act was an alternative rock band called Paradise Fears. It’s right up my alley in terms of genre, but it was my first time hearing of this rock band. Turns out they started back in 2008 and actually had ties to The Cab. I’ve been a fan of The Cab for 13 years, maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention? lol I figured they’d be a good rock band to look into a bit more. A track called "What Are You Waiting For?" played second, and it was absolutely amazing. I'm definitely adding it to my playlist.
And then, the final act: The Cab. To put it simply, they were legendary. "Locked and Loaded" playing right at the start was so intense and left a huge impression. Then there was "intoxicated," which all the fans sang along to, an acoustic version of "Endlessly," and finally, my all-time favorite, "Angel with a Shotgun"... On top of that, it was the birthday of Alex Marshall, the keyboardist (pianist), so there was a birthday celebration for him too. From the hilarious moment when Alex DeLeon threw his hat and it got caught on a chandelier, to the whole experience of jumping around and belting out the lyrics together. I finally understood why people come to see concerts and soak up this kind of atmosphere. I crossed an item off my life's bucket list this time, and it made me think that I want to see them again someday. No, I will absolutely come to see them again someday. Whenever that might be, if I ever get to see The Cab—the rock band that has brought so much happiness into my life—again someday, I'm sure it’ll feel different then. Leaving this incredibly happy day behind, I'm falling asleep exhausted tonight. I've got classes again tomorrow, so I need to wake up early. That's all for now.
